Allie Duvall's Story Behind Beauty

We love sharing little glimpses into people's lives, much like this one into the life and hair journey of Allie Duvall. Owning your own beauty is something we talk a lot about! If you've been thinking about embracing your gray hair, let Allie be your inspiration! You can find her journey documented on her instagram account @AllieGrowsGray.

In December of 2020, on the way home from a day of pandemic teaching, and searching for a bit more joy and connection I found myself in the tiny squares. Yep, I’m talking about instagram. I had taken a 2 year hiatus from all social media after having my first kiddo. My relationship with all of these platforms felt toxic and it was not bringing me any closer to anyone - and definitely not bringing me any closer to myself. But here I was, back on the ‘gram.

It probably won’t surprise you to know that it was when I was off social media that I decided to grow out my natural hair and embrace my silvers at age 30. It actually doesn’t surprise me at all. You see, when I was free from the judgement and distraction - fully embracing myself, physically and emotionally, (it still wasn't easy!) but being off of social media, without those pressures to be like everyone else, made it possible.

And then after not being on social media for those years, it was, shockingly, with very little thought, that I created a public instagram account to celebrate my gray hair. Talk about a turnaround...POOF, there was @alliegrowsgray, a place to connect, learn and share about my journey embracing my gray hair (among LOTS of other things).

It would be untrue to say that the idea to create this online community just came to me. It was sparked by a conversation I had with a gray hair/pro-age advocate (Editor’s Note: we like that, “pro age”!). I walked away from the conversation both very impressed and excited about her mission, but also disappointed that the demographic of accepting gray hair seemed dependent on age! To me that didn’t really compute.

Habits, both the ones I have developed and the ones I am trying to shake off, do not show up (and don’t go away!) overnight. If we, as a society, begin urging women to embrace their natural hair in the 40’s, 50’s or 60’s - we are throwing them a curveball. Saying “Oh, hey, I know you have gotten really comfortable with your root dyes and highlights and you *feel* like you look fresh and young, but just stop doing that and BE YOU!” HAH! At 29, after dyeing my hair for 12 years, that seemed unfathomable, so how can we begin to question women’s hesitations? Any journey like this isn't easy.

Allie Grows Gray

To me, the answer was and is, to get the positive messaging to people before they hit the box OR the foils so that you can make the decision based on the idea that you can grow your grays if you want to! I began dyeing my hair right after discovering my first gray at age 17 and continued to do so until I was 30 years old. After having the conversation with my pro age advocate, and within minutes of arriving home, I had created the account and started following all the #silversisters that I had been hashtag stalking for so long. Hashtag stalking is a real thing and many women who I chat with on instagram have started their journey by searching Pinterest, google or instagram for #grayinggracefully #youngandgray #naturalgrayhair - the list goes on. It’s a real community and on social media!

There are so many stigmas out there and this account, and sharing my journey, has become a way to not just normalize gray hair, at ANY age, but to celebrate it and encourage it. Letting myself sparkle changed me and I am not alone. I have connected with women who are embracing their silvers at all sorts of stages and seasons of life. My favs are the “silver unicorns”. The ladies who have never dyed their silvers! Every woman I have connected with through this community has inspired me in some way. The #SilverSister community is by far one of the most kind and authentic corners of the internet.... And I am so glad that I am a part of it.
