Kate Giglio's Story Behind Beauty
When I was a little kid, the most beautiful person in the world to me was my mother. I don’t have the greatest long-term memory, but one of my most vivid memories is of her tucking me into bed one night while singing me a song. What made her beautiful at that moment had nothing to do with her looks. It had everything to do with love.
One of my jobs is to make SaltyGirl’s products look so beautiful that you want to take them home with you! I’ve been designing in print and packaging for about twenty years. Since I graduated college, that’s been a big part of how I make my living.
I initially landed on my yoga mat in hot pursuit of a fit body. For a good part of my childhood, I was a little chunky. I loved to eat (still do!) and lacked the confidence to try out for team sports and be physically active. In my late teens, I started going to the gym and working out, but could not figure out why I wasn’t losing weight. This perceived failure made me harder on myself. This was in the nineties when body positivity wasn’t something much talked about. It seemed the harder I tried with workouts, the more I ate, and the less comfortable in my skin I felt, so I would eat more to feel comfortable.
After my first hot and sweaty yoga class in 2005, I went home craving tomatoes. That’s when I realized yoga was working—I heard my body’s call for nourishing food! Since then, I’ve had a yoga practice. Some years I’ve been on my mat 3-5 times a week. One year I didn’t get on my mat at all. From where I stand now, I see that even though my yoga practice wasn’t perfect, it was my path.
One day in 2012, living in Boston during a very transitional time, I walked to my local YMCA to take a yoga class. I had no intention of practicing that day after a year of not practicing at all. Something bigger than myself got me there. Facedown in child’s pose, I felt the weight of the last 18 months fall off my shoulders: a career change, my recent Melanoma diagnosis, and realizing my marriage had run its course, fell away and what opened up was space... Space that showed me I didn’t need to be stuck. The craziest thing? The yoga teacher leading that class would turn out to be my future husband!
Afterward, I walked back to my apartment crying behind my sunglasses. Energy had been moved and so began the process of sitting with the life I had created for myself. The more I got onto my mat, the clearer things became to me daily. I started living more from my heart. My husband and I mutually decided to separate. After half a year of friendship, Joe and I began dating! Yoga at the Shipyard was born, as we led yoga classes at the shipyard in East Boston where Joe lived on his boat. People from the YMCA and Eastie came to practice atop the marina roof deck to do yoga with views of the Boston waterfront and skyline. It took off, and I truly loved organizing the classes and growing that community.
We drove up the Maine coast to Nova Scotia for a week-long trip in June 2013. That’s where Joe’s mom grew up. When we arrived in Canada, we saw so much potential for opening a yoga studio! Fast forward seven months later, Supernova Power Yoga opened its doors! The challenges didn’t stop coming BUT knowing I was on the right path made it easier to keep moving forward. One of my teachers says, you can’t control the waves, but you can learn how to surf. That’s what yoga has taught me more than anything. Everything is temporary, so if life is good right now, enjoy it! And if you’re going through a rough patch? Don’t worry… the tide will turn soon enough.
At 41 years old, I’m genuinely content with my work, body, and marriage. It took me so much work to get here, but that’s the beauty of growth! It draws you closer to what you love. And when you’re doing the work that moves you, and you feel up to something bigger than yourself, you shine bright. There’s nothing more beautiful than that!
