Life is a journey, with problems to solve, lessons to learn but most of all, experiences to enjoy
As we have gotten older, and as we have endured some pretty tough stuff as a family, it has become clearer what are the most important things in this life... and those things aren't material. We have tried to make it our goal to live a #LessisMore lifestyle and this includes the items we bring into our homes.
Anyone with a busy family with kids especially, well we know how quickly that the clutter can pile up. Toys, clothes, knick knacks, you name it, it can collect in your home with the bat of an eye. Earlier this year we jumped on the idea of organizing our lives and focusing on experiences over things. We won't ever look back.
Marie Kondo has been taking the world by storm, including the SaltyGirls in Maine. She's been tidying spaces and transforming lives. We watched her Netflix series and while we haven't made a complete transormation, we are certainly working on creating more peace without accumulating actual things.
We have been living some of our favorite tips on how to create a life with more experiences in it. Some take effort while others can be effortless. Let's chat what experiences mean to us!
Go on Big (or Little) Adventures
We like to consider even small things "adventures"... having kids means that just going to the beach is not just an undertaking lol but also an adventure. Don't focus so much on the place so much as enjoying the time spent with family, friends and loved ones, headed out to do something fun together. From family vacations to a trip to the farm to pick up your CSA, anything can be an adventure if you just put yourself in that mindset!
Music, Music, Music
We love music! From a little community concert to setting up a date night, live music is such a treat! But it doesn't even have to be live music. Setting up an old school record player to listen to vintage vinyls or asking Alexa to play Beyonce, music in its many forms is one of our favorite ways to nourish the soul. In the words of Rhianna "please don't stop the music."
Find Time to Volunteer
This one should be a no brainer for those who know the SaltyGirls. We not only volunteer our time, we love to encourage others to do the same. There are many worthwhile organizations looking for volunteers and not only are you helping others, it is going to make you feel really good, like really really good. If you're looking for local charities, be sure to search for food pantries, soup kitchens and community organizations as they will have the good word on the local needs.
Learn New Things
This is one that you're probably going to have to plan, unless you really can afford to fly by the seat of your pants! Finding the time to learn new things, whether it's a watercolor class or Karate, is usually a great investment. We like to consider this another way to personally enrish ourselves and honestly, it's a form of self care. We are ever evolving creatures and learning new things just makes us more robust and well rounded individuals!
Spend Time Focusing on Relationships
Nourishing our personal relationships, an experience? Yes, yes it is! Wine night with the girls or coffee with your Mom, date night with your partner or setting out to meet new friends at a party... these are all examples of focusing on relationships that help keep you uplifted and will enrich your life. We love planning movie nights with kids and setting aside mini dates with each one to ensure that we are focusing on cultivating positive experiences with one another. In this fast paced world, slowing down and making time for one another, well, it's one of the most important things.
We'd love to hear what your favorite experiences are? What do you love to do that nourishes your soul?
