Our Favorite Ways to Create Calm
We're not experts on creating a calm space for ourselves but we do know how important it is that we try our very best! Creating calm is a form of selfcare, a natural way to take care of yourself. Finding time to breathe and gather your thoughts can make the difference between a bad day and a good one. These are some things that we find to be the simplest and easiest to execute even when the world around us seems pretty out of control.
Meditate on it! People can sometimes get hung up on not knowing "how to meditate"... but we're here to say that mediation is a practice and it's one you can do even while you're locked in the bathroom, hiding from your kids! Our Chief Mate of Community, Amanda, had this blurb in our selfcare guide, that think perfectly encapsulates meditation.
"Finding time to meditate and check in with yourself is super important under normal circumstances but when faced with moments of crisis, this becomes more important than ever. As we're looking to recharge our batteries under this pressure, it's about finding what works for you and your situation. It can be as easy as setting aside 5 minutes to sit in a room by yourself to just breathe and collect yourself. If you want to start a meditation practive, there are awesome apps that can guide you through breathing exercises and moments of silence (I love Insight Timer, Calm and Headspace) or you can practice a little self love by drawing a hot bath and listening to soft music while you soak. Finding what works for you can take a little trial and error but once you've created a little space for yourself, it can be a real life saver. Meditation isn't about perfection, it's about that little bit of necessary stillness."
Remember, it isn't about perfection, it's about calming the mind, to make space for stillness. Some days, you'll have 10 minutes, other days, you'll have one, but each day that you meditate, you're carving out a little calm for yourself... and we promise it will make a difference!
Using our favorite SaltyGirl bath products, we take relaxing baths as a regular part of our routine to unwind. It might not seem like much, but the simplicity of a bath is a peaceful, relaxing and private way to recoup after a rough day or a long week. Whether you use aromatherapy bath salts, body scrubs or just a simple bar soap, the ritual of a bath can be magical. Sometimes, it's a quick refresh and other times, we'll set up a bamboo bath tray with hot tea and a good book for a long soak...
...Or how about rolling out your yoga mat and striking a couple of poses. We know that it's easier said than done, but we do it even when the kids are around. Making that time for yourself is setting a good example, and who knows, maybe they'll even want to practice with you! Right now, we're doing zoom sessions with our gym but we know there's a ton of apps and youtube videos with great classes that you can take, from gentle to yoga to vinyasa flows!
Reading is another one of our favorite calming activities. We don't read as much as we did before having kids but we do make time for everyone to sit down and read their books, allowing for quiet time for the entire family. Creating calming habits like this, not only helps parents, but it ensures our kids are getting a good foundation for mindful behaviours.
As you can see, we're not doing anything extremely different or inventive, we're just looking to the simple things that help us get back to our center. It's amazing what that breathwork or yoga or reading or a bath can do for your mental health and mood. Right now, more than ever, we should be focusing on selfcare as a means of not just surviving through tulmultuous times but trying to thrive through them.
We'd love to hear what you're doing to create calm at home!
