Teachers Deserve Self-Care Now More than Ever

Teachers everywhere are feeling the pressure. Between figuring out your own classroom/school situation to finding the right solution for your own kids, it’s a tough job! If there were a time that teachers needed self-care it’s now!

Whether you’re going back into the classroom or teaching at home, self-care helps you feel empowered and better able to make hard decisions and get through tough days.

Here are our favorite ways for teachers to take extra special care of themselves.

Set Boundaries

If you work from home (it sounds like all schools will at some point), boundaries are crucial. Set time limits or even timers, so you don’t let work and family life blend together. Give yourself breaks, even if just five minutes to stretch, walk around, and clear your mind. Also, have clear-cut start and end times so you know when work ends and family time begins.

Journal

COVID brings on a lot of hard feelings. Don’t let the heaviness take over you. Get the feelings out. Write them down and release them. Better yet, keep a gratitude journal. Every night write down five things you’re grateful for, giving your mind pleasant thoughts before you drift off to sleep. You can journal in the morning too – setting your intention for the day. It helps settle your mind and sets you up for an enjoyable and productive day.

Create a List of Self-Care Ideas

Sprinkle self-care in throughout the day. What do you love that brings a smile to your face? Is it a cup of tea, a quick stretching session, deep breathing, or a quick chat with a friend? Work 5-minute ‘kindness hugs’ into your day. Think of it as giving yourself a gentle hug, letting you know it’s all going to be okay. Everyone has different things they love that calm their mind and make them feel good. Make a list of 10 – 20 ways you can take care of yourself and keep it handy. Look at the list throughout the day, choosing at least a few to do each day.

Take a Warm Bath

After a long, hard day of teaching, decision making, or being a mom, you deserve time to yourself. Set aside 20 minutes for a luxurious bath. Grab your favorite SaltyGirl Bath Salts and enjoy 20 minutes soaking the stress away. Use this time to meditate or relax to soft, soothing music. Let your mind shut down and let your body be aware of the amazing relaxation a warm bath provides.

Give Yourself Grace

Don’t expect perfection – these are unprecedented waters for everyone. If the day doesn’t go as planned, wash your worries away by taking care of yourself and start fresh the next day. Making tough decisions, helping your students understand their new normal, and mourning the loss of what was is normal right now. Don’t beat yourself up if you have a tough day – instead, give yourself more grace and acceptance and start fresh the next day.

We’re here for you every step of the way, teachers. We know this is hard. Please find ways to practice self-care as much as possible as we enter a school year like no other.
